District or County Public School Inspector's Report |

Description |
A "District of County Public School Inspector's Report" dated August 1, 1924 for S.S. 1. Toronto Township, Peel. The school received high marks in all categories with the following note: "The opening of the lunch room was a happy thought. The pupils may here eat their lunch in quiet. Some supervision either by a teacher or an older pupil appointed for the purpose would ensure proper conduct during the time occupied in this room. It is to be regretted that suitable blinds were not selected." The note continues further down: "In a school the blinds are not intended to exclude the light. We need as much light as can be obtained, but they are intended to exclude the sun's glare which is so injurious to the eye-sight. In our homes we often wish to exclude the light to save the furniture and draperies." |
History |
The Dixie Public School, or S.S. No. 1, refers to not one, but several Dixie schools beginning in 1816. This report concerns the second Dixie Public School which was built in 1923 at 2520 Dixie Rd. near the south- west corner of Dixie Rd. and Dundas St. The brick school had four rooms, an auditorium and steam heating. The note by the school inspector regarding the school's blinds is an interesting one. A receipt (2010.3.14) found with the school's archives during the 1923 renovations was for denim draperies from Eaton's Company, which may explain the inspector's concerns regarding the heavy window coverings. Increasing suburbanization in the 1950s forced the old school to close its doors in the spring of 1960 and students were transferred into the new Dixie Road Public School. For a time the building was used as an office by the Ministry of Transportation, before being purchased in 1983 by Serbian Orthodox Church St. Sava. |
