History |
On receipt of a Warrant, a Guider may serve in the capacity of the rank assigned therein, in this case that of a Lieutenant. Further, only those who hold a warrant are qualified to test Guides for for various awards. This warrant was made out to Helen Sutton, who was actively involved with local Cooksville Girl Guides in the 1950s-early 1960s. Helen was the first leader of these Cooksville Guides. In 1957, she became Lieutenant of the 1st Cooksville Cadet Company. Helen, and Port Credit leader Mary Fitzgibbon, were responsible for camping excursions, borrowing equipment from the army. It was in this capacity that Helen learned woodcrafting and camping. Eventually, Helen began a celebrated entomology photographer, working extensively with the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), at the urging of her fellow Guiding friend Mary Fitzgibbon. The Girl Guides have a long history in Cooksville. Guiding was established in Cooksville in May 1931. During the war there were no activities for Girl Guides in Cooksville, but in September 1946 activities resumed for the 1st Girl Guides Company, and the 2nd Girl Guides Company was started in 1947. The First Cooksville Brownies were founded in February 1948 and in 1960 the Peel Central Division Land Ranger Company was formed. In 1958 Cooksville District became a divison of its own, as it was a district with Erindale prior. In 1962, Cooksville came under the control of the White Oaks Area, along with all of Peel and Halton Counties, excluding Burlington. In 1972, Cooksville District became part of the Credit River Division. Cooksville Division used to camp at Irondale, Ontario called Wabpashant until the creation of Camp Wyoka in 1965. In 2019, the White Oaks Area was disbanded. |
