Description |
A collection of recipes and other clippings. (.26) contains a recipe for "Ripe Cucumber Sweet", most likely in reference to sweet pickles made of ripe cucumbers. It reads as follows: "Ripe Cucumber Sweet 8 cucumbers cut and sprinkle with salt Let stand over night 1 1/2 quarts vinegar 1 1/2 lbs brown sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cayenne Bring to a boil then add cucumbers boil 20 minutes That is all there is in it. I feel sure I did not leave anything out before." |
History |
This recipe card belonged to the Greeniaus family who lived on Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS in the historic Village of Sheridan, in historic Mississauga. A similar recipe for Ripe Cucumber Pickles or "Senfgurken", can be found in the "United States Regional Cookbook" published by the Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago in 1947. The book attributes the ripe to the Pennsylvania Dutch community, an ethnic group in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States largely descend from the Palatinate region of Germany. Interestingly, the Greeniaus family were of German heritage hailing from Pennsylvania, USA, and therefore, likely brought over the knowledge of this recipe to Canada when Sebastian and Eva Greeniaus immigrated to Toronto Township (historic Mississauga) in 1808. |
