History |
Norman Pomeroy Greeniaus and Ethel Irene Hamilton were married in Toronto Township on March 12, 1913. They were married for 49 years until Ethel Irene's death in 1962. The marriage took place at Ethel's family home, "Evergreen Hedge", located at Lot 10, Concession 6 WHS, Toronto Township (historic Mississauga). The Hamilton family were originally from Diamond Village (nicknamed the "Catholic Swamp" by newspapers at the time), Trafalgar Township (later amalgamated into the City of Mississauga in 1974 as part of Lisgar), just south of Osprey Marsh (Lot 4, Con. 10 NS). However, Ethel's father, John Hamilton Sr., had bought the land from John Fletcher Switzer on March 2, 1891, for $8,000. The property was located in Lisgar (formerly Switzer's Corners). Subsequently, he acquired the southwest portion (50 acres) of the same lot, totaling 150 acres, which he granted to his son John Melville Hamilton in 1927 and 1929, respectively. Melville owned these properties until the mid-1940s when he sold them to Kenneth and Florence McIntire, who in turn sold them to the Erin Mills Development Corps in 1956. Today, this area is part of Erin Mills West subdivision, located roughly at Derry and Glen Erin Roads. Norman Greeniaus was the son of Catherine Jane Kenney and Gaylord Greeniaus of Sheridan Village, Toronto Township (now Mississauga) who lived south-east of Middle Road and Town Line (now the Queen Elizabeth Way and Winston Churchill Boulevard) at Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS. |
