History |
William Gaylord Greeniaus was born on July 31, 1870, in Toronto Township, Ontario. He is the son of Gaylord Greeniaus and Catherine Jane Kenney of Sheridan Village in historic Mississauga. William worked on the Greeniaus farm, where he was raised, for his whole life. He farmed the land that had been in his family since his great grandfather, Sebastian Greeniaus, acquired the land grant. Sebastian Greeniaus (1761-1847), of German heritage, immigrated to Canada from Pennsylvania in 1802. He was granted Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS, South-East of Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and Winston Churchill Boulevard on July 1st 1808. The family began farming their land with his sons continuing the farming lifestyle. On November 17, 1899, Charles W. Greeniaus, William's brother, purchased the north half of Lot 35, Con. 2 SDS. While William does not appear on land registry records officially for either property, it is likely that he shared the responsibilities of the land with his brother, hence why the taxes are addressed to him. By 1955, Sebastian's great-grandson, Norman and his son Wilmer were the last Greeniaus family members to live and farm on the original Greeniaus property. That year, they sold the property to United Lands Corporation for the development of the Park Royal subdivision. |
