History |
"Mrs. N. Greeniaus" refers to Ethel Irene Hamilton (1885-1962), who was married to Norman Pomeroy Greeniaus (1876-1970). The couple married on March 12, 1913, in Toronto Township, Ontario, and had four children during their marriage. Faith was an important facet of the Greeniaus family's life. Ethel Greeniaus may have used this hymnal at her local church, Sheridan United Church. The area of Sheridan Village (now split between Oakville and Mississauga) where the Greeniaus family lived had a strong Wesleyan Methodist influence. In 1838, a school was built that doubled as a church for all denominations. Soon after, a purpose-built chapel was constructed on the Lawrence family farm. In 1869, a larger red brick building was erected to accommodate the growing congregation of the Sheridan Wesleyan Methodist Church. However, it was not until 1874 that the church officially joined the Methodist Church of Canada. The church became Sheridan United Church in 1925. It operated within the Cooksville circuit from 1856-1928 and then the Trafalgar circuit from 1928-1961, after which it became an independent charge. In 1963, it merged with Trinity Park Royal Church to form Sheridan-Park Royal Church, relocating to 2501 Truscott Road. In 1977, a new church was constructed to accommodate the growing congregation. Today, only two stained glass windows remain from the 1869 brick church, which Ethel Hamilton would have remembered. |
