Biography |
Florence "Flossie" Gertrude Dales (nee Arnott) was born on May 7, 1891, to Elizabeth Lucinda Vance (1864-1930) and Henry Mason Arnott (1856-1933). Florence had two siblings, William James Arnott and Mary Ellen Charlton (nee Arnott). As a child, she attended S.S. #17, also known as Eden School. The family resided in the now-lost village of Whaley's Corners (historic Mississauga) on the eastern half of Lot 14, Concession 5 WHS (West of Hurontario Street), near present-day Mississauga Road and Highway 407. The property had originally belonged to Florence's grandfather, James Arnott. Upon James' death in 1884, the land was divided between Florence's father, Henry Mason, and her uncle, William John. While her uncle retained the smaller northern section and later purchased David Whaley's adjacent property in 1889, Florence's father farmed the larger southern half of the Arnott property. Florence Arnott married William Thomas Dale (1891-1971) on January 27, 1915. Although it is unknown exactly how they met, it is likely they met locally, as there was a Dale family living east of the Arnotts on Lot 15, Concession 2 WHS. They had two children: Myrtle Annie Freed (1915-2015) and William Lyle Dale (1918-2012). Florence passed away on August 18, 1978, in Lowville, Halton, Ontario, and is buried at St. George's Anglican Cemetery in Halton. |
