Biography |
Mary Ellen "Ella" Arnott was born on August 24, 1887, to Elizabeth Lucinda Vance (1864-1930) and Henry Mason Arnott (1856-1933). Mary had two siblings, William James Arnott and Florence Gertrude Dales (nee Arnott). As a child, she attended S.S. #17, also known as Eden School. The family resided in the now-lost village of Whaley's Corners (historic Mississauga) on the eastern half of Lot 14, Concession 5 WHS (West of Hurontario Street), near present-day Mississauga Road and Highway 407. The property had originally belonged to Mary's grandfather, James Arnott. Upon James' death in 1884, the land was divided between Mary's father, Henry Mason, and her uncle, William John. While her uncle retained the smaller northern section and later purchased David Whaley's adjacent property in 1889, Mary' father farmed the larger southern half of the Arnott property. Mary Arnott married Robert Thompson Charlton on May 20, 1914. They had four children: John Arnott (1915-1985), Marjarie G. (b. 1917), Dorothy E. (b. 1919) and Arman R. (c. 1921). After her marriage, Mary, Robert and their children lived on the former Gardner farm on Lot 8, Concession 4 WHS (West of Hurontario Street) at modern-day Creditview and Mississauga Roads. In 1947, the farm was sold to Joe Miller and the family moved to Chinguacousy Township. She passed away on January 15, 1973, and is buried at Churchville Cemetery in Brampton. |
