Biography |
William James Arnott was born on October 27, 1888, to Elizabeth Lucinda Vance (1864-1930) and Henry Mason Arnott (1856-1933). He had two sisters, Mary Ellen Charlton (nee Arnott) and Florence Gertrude Dales (nee Arnott). As a child, he attended S.S. #17, also known as Eden School. The family resided in the now-lost village of Whaley's Corners (historic Mississauga) on the eastern half of Lot 14, Concession 5 WHS (West of Hurontario Street), near present-day Mississauga Road and Highway 407. The property had originally belonged to William's grandfather, James Arnott, who likely inspired William's middle name. Upon James' death in 1884, the land was divided between William's father, Henry Mason, and his uncle, William John, who likely inspired William James' first name. William John retained the smaller northern section and later purchased David Whaley's adjacent property in 1889. Meanwhile, William James' father farmed the larger southern half of the Arnott property. William James Arnott married Vivian Heloise Whaley, the granddaughter of David Whaley, on June 14, 1916. They had three children: William Grenville (1920-2011), Jas Roswell (1922-2003), and Harry Mervyn (1925-1989). After his marriage, William appears to have continued living with his parents on their farm. A 1958 voter's list indicates that he was still employed as a farmer. He passed away on January 26, 1974, and is buried at Churchville Cemetery in Brampton. |
