Biography |
George "Gordon" Allison Burton was born on December 30, 1883, in Halton, Ontario to Joseph Burton (1852-1923) and Marion "Minnie" Fogerty (1856-1940). However, by the 1891 census, George and his family are listed as living in Toronto Township (historic Mississauga). George would have spent his childhood living on the west half (100 acres) of Lot 12, Concession 4 WHS. Today, this area would be located roughly at Financial Dr. and Meadowvale Blvd., Mississauga. The land had come into the family in 1844 when George's grandfather, Samuel Burton, bought the property from James Jackson. On September 22, 1887, the land transferred to George's father, Joseph, and remained in the family during her youth. He also lived beside his cousin, Samuel Tisdale, who had been orphaned and was living with George's grandmother, Rachel Burton (née Allison). George, his siblings, and cousin Samuel all attended S.S. No. 17 "Eden" School in Toronto Township, located nearby modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. By 1901, George is still listed as living in Toronto Township, but it is believed that at some later point he moved to Manitoba. He died on June 1, 1912 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba at the age of 28. |
