Biography |
Samuel Herbert "Herb" Cantelon Jr. was born on March 30, 1884, in Toronto Township (historic Mississauga), to Samuel Cantelon Sr. (1837-1925) and Elizabeth "Eliza" K. Cook(e) (1845-1911). Herb's grandfather, John Cantelon (1800-1887), originally hailed from County Tipperary, Ireland. He arrived in Canada around 1835, eventually purchasing Lot 8, Concession 6 WHS from John Miller in 1855, along the Firth Line (now Erin Mills Parkway), which, at the time, was little more than wilderness. John and his wife Catherine had several children, including Herb's father, Samuel, William, and James. In 1861, John granted the land to his son William, who, in turn, granted the southeast quarter (50 acres) to Samuel Sr., Herb's father, on February 24, 1870. Samuel Sr. spent his entire life on the family farm, frequently making trips to Toronto with produce. He traversed muddy roads and lodged at the Peacock Inn in West Toronto. Herb's branch of the family were members of the Eden Methodist (later United) Church at historic Lisgar. As a child, he attended S.S. no. 17 Eden School nearby the church, located near modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. Through marriage, the Cantelon family became connected to several other prominent early settling families, creating a very tight-knit rural farming community. On April 1, 1909, Samuel Sr. granted the land to his son Herb, who worked the land until his retirement. On April 16, 1948, Herb granted his land to John H. Nixon, who, in turn, sold the land to the Erin Mills Development Corps in 1956 for the construction of the Erin Mills West subdivision. Today, Cantelon Crescent in Mississauga is named in honor of the Cantelon family. Herb passed away in 1965 in Streetsville and is buried at the Streetsville Public Cemetery. |
