Biography |
Thomas "Tom" Alexander Leslie was born on May 30, 1881, to George Leslie (1846-1910) and Jane McClure (1856-1934). He was one of six siblings. The family was of Scottish Presbyterian origins. Thomas' great-grandfather, John Leslie, and his great-grandmother, Esther Beatty, immigrated to Canada and moved to Peel in the spring of 1824. John and Esther leased 200 acres from King’s College (Lot 12, Con. 5, WHS) in Toronto Township (modern-day Mississauga Rd. and Meadowvale Blvd.). On the south half of this property, in 1826, the family built a one-and-a-half-story log house, 26x26 feet, with the help of their new neighbors. However, the south half of the property was sold to Chistopher Rutledge in 1884, and for the next few decades, the family did not live in the Leslie Log House, rather they lived in the north half of the lot. As a child, Thomas attended S.S. No. 17 "Eden" School in Toronto Township, near modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. According to the 1901 census, Thomas A. Leslie is listed as a farm labourer, though interestingly, the census enumerator was also Thomas A. Leslie. He married Annie Coyne Daisy Cantelon (1882-1909) on November 22, 1905 in Peel. Together they had two children: Lillie Danilla Thomsen Leslie (b. 1906) and Thomas Andrew Jr. (1909-1971). Unfortunately, his wife died only a few months after Thomas Jr. was born. Thomas Andrew Sr. died on November 7, 1939, in Streetsville and is buried in the Streetsville Cemetery. |
