Biography |
Wilbert Leslie was born on October 18, 1889, in Burlington to George Leslie (1846-1910) and Jane McClure (1856-1934). He was one of six siblings. The family was of Scottish Presbyterian origins. Wilbert's great-grandfather, John Leslie, and his great-grandmother, Esther Beatty, immigrated to Canada and moved to Peel in the spring of 1824. John and Esther leased 200 acres from King’s College (Lot 12, Con. 5, WHS) in Toronto Township (modern-day Mississauga Rd. and Meadowvale Blvd.). On the south half of this property, in 1826, the family built a one-and-a-half-story log house, 26x26 feet, with the help of their new neighbors. However, the south half of the property was sold to Chistopher Rutledge in 1884, and for the next few decades, the family did not live in the Leslie Log House, rather they lived in the north half of the lot. As a child, Wilbert attended S.S. No. 17 "Eden" School in Toronto Township, near modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. In 1911, the family is listed as employing two domestics, Alice Ballard and Richard Peaks, indicating that they were fairly well-off. On September 20, 1921, he married Sylvia Burton (1900-1948) in Peel, and together they had four children: George (1922-1936), Jack Wilbert (1924-1974), Norman "Paul" (1930-1994), and Herbert (1933-1933). In 1924, Wilbert and Sylvia bought the south half of the original Leslie lands, and the Leslie Log House. They later sold the land shortly prior to Sylvia's death in 1948. The land was later sold to Markborough Properties Ltd. The Leslie Log House was later moved to the former Pinchin property in Streetsville and now serves as the home of the Streetsville Historical Society. He died on February 21, 1963, in Streetsville. |
