Biography |
Robert Wellington Rutledge, known simply as Wellington to those acquainted with him, was born on June 10, 1884, in Toronto Township (historic Mississauga) to Edward Rutledge (1830-1918) and Mary Ann "Annie" Beattie (1841-1917). During his childhood, Wellington resided on the west half (100 acres) of Lot 8, Concession 5 WHS, Toronto Township, situated roughly north of Streetsville near present-day Erin Mills Parkway and Millcreek Drive, Mississauga. This land became part of the family's holdings when John Moore sold the west half of the lot to Wellington's grandfather, William Rutledge, on March 8, 1831. Subsequently, on March 31, 1869, William transferred ownership to his son, Wellington's father, Edward Rutledge, for $4,000. Wellington received his education at the nearby S.S. #17 "Eden" School in Toronto Township (historic Mississauga), located close to modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. On July 12, 1909, he entered matrimony with Ethel May Cunningham (1887-1957) in the City of Toronto. The union blessed them with two children: John Edward "Cecil" (1909-1948) and Olga (born 1917). Following their nuptials, they relocated to Kitchener before settling in Woodstock by 1931. Wellington eventually passed away in Toronto in 1958. |
