Biography |
Edgar Mason Switzer was born on October 17, 1889, in Peel to Francis William Switzer (1851-1928) and Eliza Jane Robinson Mason (1853-1938). The family was of Irish heritage and belonged to the Methodist faith. Edgar attended the nearby S.S. #17 "Eden" School in Toronto Township (historic Mississauga), near modern-day Argentia and Derry Roads. The family was prolific in the area, so much so that the area (modern-day Lisgar, Mississauga) was named "Switzer's Corners" after Edgar's grandfather, John Switzer's farm, and the community church located on his property. As a child, Edgar would have lived on the southwest half (50 acres) of Lot 10, Concession 6 WHS, Toronto Township, located roughly at Derry Rd. and Winston Churchill Blvd., Mississauga. The land in Switzer's Corner had been in the Switzer family for some time (as the name suggests), but it officially became part of Edgar's immediate family's holdings when the property was sold to Edgar's father, Francis Switzer, by his older brother David for the nominal amount of $1 on December 24, 1888 (possibly as a Christmas present). Francis later sold the parcel to John Hamilton on March 24, 1909, for $3,000. After the sale, it appears that the family moved west to Trafalgar Township. In the 1930s and 1940s, voter lists indicate that Edgar worked as a florist and grower. Edgar died on July 22, 1956, and is buried in Brampton Cemetery. |
