A black and white photo of the Hamilton family home with John and Rebecca Hamilton and their five children photographed in front of the home. The two-chimney home has a stucco finish with three upper windows with shutters, two lower windows and a door in the middle. There is a seated woman holding a baby with two children beside her. To her right is a man standing with a boy in front of him. To their right is the blurry image of a child riding a large horse beside a young foal. The photo is on cream matting with "Evergreen Hedge" printed in black on the bottom. |
History |
The people pictured in this photo are John Hamilton Sr. (1856-1938) and his wife Rebecca Cordingley (1861-1897). They are surrounded by their children: Ethel Irene Hamilton (1883-1962), Garnet Charles William Cecil Hamilton (1886-1947), Pearl Ivy Louvilla Hamilton (1888-1978), John Melville Hamilton (1891-1966), and Carl Lloyd Hamilton (1895-1914). Judging from the ages and number of children, this photograph was likely taken sometime in 1896. At the time, the family had five children including young Carl Hamilton, seated on his mother's lap, who appears to be just one year old in the photo and his sister Ethel, standing beside her mother, who appears to be around 13 years old. Further, the photo had to have been taken before Vera Hamilton's birth in 1897 and her mother's death the same year. John Hamilton purchased the east half of Lot 10, Concession 6 WHS (100 acres), Toronto Township (historic Mississauga), from John Fletcher Switzer on March 2, 1891, for $8,000. The home was located in Switzer's Corners, now Lisgar. They had a home on the property that they named Evergreen Hedge. Subsequently, he acquired the southwest portion (50 acres) of the same lot, totaling 150 acres, which he granted to his son John Melville Hamilton in 1927 and 1929, respectively. Melville owned these properties until the mid-1940s when he sold them to Kenneth and Florence McIntire, who in turn sold them to the Erin Mills Development Corps in 1956. Today, this area is part of Erin Mills West subdivision, located roughly at Derry and Glen Erin Roads. |
