Description |
A framed photograph depicts a farmhouse and outbuilding from an aerial view. While originally black-and-white, the photograph has been colourized to give the farmhouse and outbuilding the appearance of red brick and green roofs. It is enclosed in a wooden frame with a simple ribbed pattern. |
History |
This photograph depicts the Greeniaus family farm on the north half of Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS, in Toronto Township's Sheridan Village (now part of Mississauga). Sebastian Greeniaus (1761-1847), of German heritage, immigrated to Canada from Pennsylvania in 1802. He was granted Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS, southeast of Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and Winston Churchill Boulevard on July 1st, 1808. The family began farming their land, with his sons continuing the farming lifestyle. The bulk of the land remained in the family for generations. Sebastian sold the north half of the lot to his son, Peter Greeniaus (1797-1871), in 1823, who in turn sold it to his eldest son, David Greeniaus (b. 1823), on August 23rd, 1854. Only a few days later, David sold it to his younger brother, Gaylord Greeniaus (1827-1893), on September 9th. In 1891, Gaylord Greeniaus built a brick house on the property, which is the home depicted in this aerial photograph. Gaylord then sold the land to his eldest son, Charles W. Greeniaus (1866-1929), in 1873, who continued farming the land. Charles later sold the parcel to his younger brother, Norman P. Greeniaus (1876-1970), in 1910. In 1941, Norman sold the property to his son, Wilmer Greeniaus (1918-2006), but Norman continued to live on the farm. By 1955, Sebastian's great-grandson, Norman, and his son Wilmer were the last Greeniaus family members to live and farm on the property. That year, they sold the property to United Lands Corporation for the development of the Park Royal subdivision. Though the home was used for a short time as a sales office after its opening in 1958, it was torn down shortly after. |
