History |
In this photo is Garnet Charles William Cecil Hamilton (1886-1947) and his wife Mary Helena Cook (1887-1976), known after her marriage as "Lena Hamilton". The Cooks lived in Meadowvale, Toronto Township (now Mississauga) near Lake Wabukayne (Lot 6, Con. 6 WHS), while the Hamilton family were from Diamond Village (nicknamed the "Catholic Swamp" by newspapers at the time), Trafalgar Township (later amalgamated into the City of Mississauga in 1974 as part of Lisgar), just south of Osprey Marsh (Lot 4, Con. 10 NS). As children, both Garnet and Lena were classmates at S.S. #17 School in Toronto Township, historic Mississauga. The school was located at 2285 Derry Rd West. They likely also went to the same church and community areas, and knew each other from the time they were children. The couple were married on June 25, 1913, in Peel, Ontario. A.E. McCollum purchased his photography business from R.H. Trueman, who in turn had bought his business from early Brampton photographer John Ward Cole. McCollum paid homage to his predecessors by claiming that he had "all negatives made by Messers Cole and Trueman carefully preserved", and continued to operate out of 5 Main Street South, Brampton, where Cole had set up his business in the 1860s. A 1914 fire adjacent to his business destroyed much of his inventory and supplies. Despite briefly reopening, he moved later that year to 14 Main Street North, Brampton, where this photo was presumably taken. |
