Description |
A sepia-toned photograph labeled "Norman Greeniaus' Mother and Murray." The photo was taken outside against a brick wall and bushes. An elderly woman wearing a polka-dot dress is leaning on a cane held in her left hand. In her right hand, she holds the hand of a young child wearing overalls, a white shirt, and a cap. |
History |
This photo shows Catherine Jane Kenney (1832-1920), the mother of Norman Pomeroy Greeniaus (1876-1970), with her grandson Murray Hamilton Greeniaus (1914-1992). The photo was likely taken circa 1918, as Murray appears to be about 3-4 years old. Catherine was the second wife of Gaylord Greeniaus. During their marriage, they had six children together, including Norman Pomeroy Greeniaus, Murray's father. In 1891, Gaylord was a farmer and built the family home on their property on the north half of Lot 34, Concession 2, SDS, in Toronto Township's Sheridan Village (now part of Mississauga). The home was a two-storey red brick structure, likely the one depicted behind Catherine and Murray in this photograph. Murray's father, Norman, and his younger brother, Wilmer, worked the land until 1955 when the farm property was sold to United Lands Corporation for the development of the Park Royal subdivision. Although the home was used for a short time as a sales office after its opening in 1958, it was torn down shortly after. |
