History |
From 2000-2007, Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport was greatly expanded as the centerpiece of the Airport Master Plan. The construction was split into three phases. The first phase from 2000-2003 was to include the new Terminal 1, which was a joint venture between Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Adamson Associates, and Moshe Safdie Associates. The terminal was completed in 2003 to replace the both Aeroquay One and Terminal 2. This also included Piers D and E, a new parking garage and various other upgrades. Also during this time, Terminal 1 was beign demolished. The second phase from 2003-2005 included the partial demolition of Terminal 2, and the construction of Pier F. The third stage from 2005-2007 was to continue improving the new terminal building. Toronto Pearson International Airport grew out of the Malton Airport which was constructed in 1938 by the Toronto Harbour Commission. The airport was built on land located on Lots 6 through 10 on Concessions 5 and 6, EHS. Through the early years the airport grew and developed and by the late 1950s control and operation were taken over by Transport Canada. In 1960 the airport was renamed Toronto International Airport. In 1963 Terminal 1 or Aeroquay was constructed and in the 1970s Terminal 2 opened. In 1984 the airport's name was changed once again to the Lester B. Pearson International Airport. |
