History |
Wilmer Greeniaus attended Port Credit High School in 1932-1933 and is present in this photo. Wilmer would have been 15 years old when this photo was taken. Port Credit High School was established due to the need for a local high school for the residents of Port Credit. Prior to its establishment, residents had to travel far to attend schools in Toronto. In response to this need, Port Credit rate-payers agreed to construct a 5-room school on 3 acres of land to be shared by elementary and secondary students during a public meeting. By 1919, the Port Credit Public School Board established its "Continuation School" on Forest Avenue, comprising 2 rooms and staffed by 2 teachers: Mr. H. A. Doupe and Miss Leggott. While the "First Form" was free, the "Second Form" cost $9.00 per year, and the "Third and Fourth Forms" cost $15.00 annually. The demand for more space quickly became evident. In 1926, a six-room addition was constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students. By 1928, the school's growth had experienced a significant surge. In June of 1929, just before the Great Depression, excavation began on a new building for Port Credit High School. The new facility featured ten classrooms, physics and chemistry labs, a library, an auditorium seating 500, a gymnasium, a circular track, a basement cafeteria, and individual lockers for winter wear. At the outset of the Great Depression, Port Credit High School had a student population of 283 and nine teachers on staff. By the end of the decade, over 400 students were pursuing academics. Today, Port Credit High School continues to thrive, although much has changed since its inception. |
