History |
The Applewood Division of the Girl Guides was founded prior to the White Oaks Area's formation in 1962. The earliest records of the division date to 1959, though the 1st Applewood Company was operational as early as 1954. At that time, the area was home to three different divisions: Dixie-Burnhampthorpe, Applewood-Orchard Heights, and Cooksville. Mrs. Belshaw was the commissioner of the Applewood-Orchard Heights Division during this early time. Big structural change happened in 1972. On May 30, 1972, Division Commissioner Sandra Franklin (1970-1974) moved, "That the division bounded on the east by the Etobicoke Creek; on the south by Queen Elizabeth Way; on the west by #10 Highway and the north by the proposed Highway #403 be called Applewood Division." In so doing, the three previously seperate divisions were amalgamated into the Applewood Division. For many years, their crest remained an apple tree, to represent the area's orchard past, with three apple to represent the divisons that had been amalgamated. Under Division Commissioner Edna Stephenson's term (1974-1979), the guides took on the international stage by making several international trips, proving guiding was on the move. Nancy Williams was Division Commissioner from 1980-1984 during which time the Girl Guides' 70th Anniversary was celebrated. Under Division Commissioner Audrey Nichols (1984-1987), the 75th Girl Guides' anniversary was held in 1985. Applewood held a Promise and Law celebration as part of these activities. In 1987, a new crest was created with seven apples to represent the seven districts that had joined Applewood. |
