History |
Harriet Botsford Pomeroy (1861-1916), a known photographic retoucher who worked at Moll's Photograph Gallery in Bedford, Pennsylvania (Bedford Gazette, Sept 12, 1902). She was married to Daniel Niles Pomeroy (1858-1928), the son of Rachel Oliphant and Norman Pomeroy. After his death, she married George W. Hetzel in 1902. Peter Johann Greeniaus was married to Elizabeth Ann Oliphant. The Oliphant family settled in Sheridan Village (present-day southern Mississauga), where their descendants remained. This portait was created after Peter's death in 1871. Based on a photograph taken during his lifetime, it is likely that Harriet Botsford Pomeroy produced this. Several copies of this same portrait were owned by the family. At the time, retouched photographic portraits were a popular form of memorization. This offered families a way to preserve or enhance the likeness of a loved one. These portraits were often hand-finished with charcoal or paint, creating a more life-like or idealized image. Several versions of this portrait were created and shared among the family. |
