History |
This Girl Guides First Aid badge belonged to local Applewood Girl Guide Jo-Anne Storen, who was a member of the 1st Applewood Company in the White Oaks Area in the 1960s. Jo-Anne likely earned with badge sometime in/after 1964 as this particular badge design was introduced in 1964. Jo-Anne was a desperately shy child and it was a great challenge for her to be part of a big group. Upon "flying up" to the Guides, she did not last long, but her elder sister continued with the Applewood Guides for some time. The Applewood Division of the Girl Guides was founded prior to the White Oaks Area's formation in 1962. The earliest records of the division date to 1959, though the 1st Applewood Company became operational on October 1, 1954. They held meetings at the Applewood United Church. Mrs. Belshaw was the commissioner of the Applewood-Orchard Heights Division during this early time. In 1970, the 1st Applewood Company was renamed the 68th Mississauga Girl Guide Company and moved into the Westacres Public School. According to the Girl Guides' Policy Organization and Rules book from 1965, a First Aid badge will be awarded to Guides who complete the Canadian Red Cross Society's First Aid Certificate for ages 12-16 and the St. John Ambulance Association Preliminary Certificate in First Aid. Further, all tests must be conducted in accordance with the rules of the Association or Society concerned. |
