History |
The Credit Capers were a guide company in the Forestwood District in the White Oak Area's Credit River Division. The first known guiding activity along the Credit River was a camp held by the 18th Toronto Company in 1923. The first Guiding Companies in the surrounding area were likely founded sometime around 1950. Prior to the formation of the White Oaks Area in 1962, Credit River guides were part of the Peel South Division of the Hamilton Area. Upon the creation of the White Oaks Area, these guides were formed under the Mississauga Division until 1970 when the Credit River Division was formed. In 1973, the Credit River Division added seven districts: Brookmede, Cooksville, Forestwood, Homelands, Oakridge, Streetsville/Meadowvale, and Woodlands. Division Commissioner Dolores O'Neil held a crest design contest for the division in 1974. The winner was Cindy Aldred of the 62nd Mississauga Guide Company, Forestwood District. In 1984, a design contest was held for an updated crest. Yet again, the contest winner, Heather Thompson, was a Forestwood District girl. Forestwood District clearly established itself as a valuable part of the Credit River Division. In October 1985, the Girl Guides of Canada marked their 75th anniversary with a weekend camp recreation held by the Credit Capers. 465 girls from the Credit River Division, including the Credit Capers, re-enacted an imagined 1910 camp, loosely inspired by the original 1923 camp held along the bank of the Credit River by the 18th Toronto Company. All the girls wore heritage costumes from the guides' past. Parents brought a smorgasbord of food to the camp, just like 75 years earlier. Guides erected a rope bridge over the river, crossing the Credit followed by the Brownies trailing after them. The day ended with a service at St. Peter's Anglican Church. This banner was likely made for and used at the event. |
