History |
This banner, given to former Mayor Hazel McCallion, references Mississauga's sister city of Kariya, Japan. Mississauga and Kariya forged a sistership in 1981, following a 1950s initiative to garner positive international relations following World War II. As per the Sister City Declaration of July 7, 1981, mayors Hazel McCallion and Ichimatsu Miyata of Mississauga and Kariya, respectively, pledged a sistership that would "promote goodwill between both our cities and [...] enhance the international awareness of our citizens through the exchange of cultural, education, and sporting activities". Since 1981, Mississauga and Kariya alike have enjoyed the cultural, educational, and economical benefits of this very sistership. Today, Mississauga boasts more economical connections with Japan than any other city in Canada. In 1992, Missisauga opened Kariya Park, featuring Japanese gardens and a pavillion. In 2001, Kariya opened a similar park of their own, which hosts a small replica of Mississauga City Hall, and a bear sculpture by artist John McEwen. |
