Biography |
Rebecca Ann Cordingley was born on March 20, 1861, in Trafalgar, Ontario, to her parents Charles W. and Rebecca Petch. Originally from England, her parents were staunch Methodists, with Charles serving as a trustee of the Carman Methodist East Church for 20 years and even donating the first organ to the church. The Cordingley farm, which Rebecca's grandfather had purchased in 1850, was situated in Trafalgar Township. However, on May 7, 1857, Robert Peck, Samuel Carr, and William Tomlinson sold the northwest quarter of Lots 33 and 34, Concession 3 west, SDS, Toronto Township (Mississauga), to Rebecca's father, Charles Cordingley. In total, the family owned 100 acres and established a farm on Lower Middle Road (now Royal Windsor Drive), where Rebecca likely grew up. As a Path Master overseeing road clearances in the township, Charles Cordingley and the family would have been well-known in the local community. Rebecca married John Hamilton on December 20, 1881, in Peel, Ontario. Over the course of 14 years, they had six children. John Hamilton purchased the east half of Concession 6, Lot 10 WHS (100 acres), Toronto Township, from John Fletcher Switzer on March 2, 1891, for $8,000. Rebecca likely lived on this farm, situated near modern-day Derry and Glen Erin, until her death. Unfortunately, she passed away relatively young on November 26, 1897, in Milton, Ontario, at the age of 36. |
