Biography |
John Melville Hamilton, born on August 11, 1891, was the son of John Hamilton and Rebecca Ann Cordingley. Due to being named after his father, he went by the name Melville. John Hamilton Sr. purchased the east half of Concession 6, Lot 10 WHS (100 acres), Toronto Township (historic Mississauga), from John Fletcher Switzer on March 2, 1891, for $8,000. Subsequently, he acquired the southwest portion (50 acres) of the same lot, totaling 150 acres. Melville was six years old when his mother passed away in 1897. He was raised with his father's second wife, Emma Jane South, whom his father married in 1900. From his father's first marriage, he had five siblings, and from his father's second marriage, he had two siblings. In 1911, at the age of 20, Melville was living in Battleford, Saskatchewan, and working as a hired hand. By 1921, he was a lodger residing in Toronto West. On April 8, 1929, Melville married Edith Mary Lyons, who was born in England, in York, Ontario, Canada. He worked and lived on his father's farm, which is located roughly at Derry and Glen Erin today. John Hamilton Sr. granted his son, John Melville, the family farm properties totaling 150 acres in 1927 and 1929, respectively. Melville owned these properties until the mid-1940s when he sold them to Kenneth and Florence McIntire, who in turn sold them to the Erin Mills Development Corps in 1956. Today, this area is part of Erin Mills West, located roughly at Derry and Glen Erin Roads. Melville passed away in 1966 and is buried in Streetsville Public Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. |
