Biography |
George Edward Manley was born on August 22, 1852, in County Cork, Ireland, to Bartholomew Manley and Catherine Dempsey. The Manley family immigrated to Canada around 1881, settling in Sheridan. On October 24, 1881, George and his mother Catherine purchased 100 acres on the north half of Lot 31, Concession 2 SDS from John Kentner. Their property included the S.S. #5 School, and the Manleys provided housing for the teachers. Upon his mother Catherine's passing in 1889, George inherited the property. On November 14, 1889, he married Arletta Elizabeth Greeniaus. Together, they raised three children and found success farming the land. In their later years, George and Arletta passed the farm on to their sons, Charles Gaylord Manley (named after Arletta's father) and Harold Kennedy Manley. Charles and his wife assumed care for George and Arletta. George passed away on August 8, 1934, at the age of 81, and was laid to rest in Mississauga, Ontario. In 1955, Charles sold the Manley farm to the United Lands Corporation for the Park Royal subdivision, while retaining the property where the family home stood until 1968. |
