Biography |
Johann Peter Greeniaus was born on February 10, 1797, in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. Both his German maternal grandfather: Johann Martin Wiel and his German paternal great grandfather: Johann Conrad Gryneus; are possibly his namesakes. His mother was a German immigrant and his father was descended from German immigrants. He married Elizabeth Ann Oliphant on May 21, 1822. They had five children together. Peter's grandfather Simon Conrad and his father Sebastian were weavers by trade. It was Peter, who established the family as notable and successful farmers. He would pass on the family farm in Sheridan Village (historic Mississauga) which he inherited from his father Sebastian, to his son Gaylord Greeniaus, and eventually his grandson Norman Pomeroy Greeniaus, and his great grandson Wilmer Kenney Greeniaus. Over the years the family also operated a cooperage and blacksmithy, and undertook some early surveying in the township. He died on December 10, 1871, in Clarkson, Ontario, at the age of 74, and was buried in Mississauga, Ontario. |
