Biography |
Sebastian Greeniaus was born in Pennsylvannia in 1761 to his father, Simon Conrad Gryneus, and his mother, Anna Margaretha Rabb Gryneus. Both of his parents were German-speaking immigrants from Alsace, France. Sebastian married Eva Barbara Wiel, who was also a German immigrant, on April 06, 1790 at Schwartzwald Reformed Church in Berks County, Pennsylvania. They had 6 children together while living in Pennsylvannia. Most of Eva's family had fled to Canada following the Revolutionary War as United Empire Loyalists. It is unclear whether Sebastian himself was considered a Loyalist, but the family came to settle near Niagara in 1804 and received a land patent in Toronto Township in 1808. The old homestead property was along the Middle Road (Q.E.W.). Like his father, Sebastian was a weaver by trade. He also served in the War of 1812 with the 2nd Regiment York Militia with his son Daniel Greeniaus (1793-1863). Sebastian died in 1847 in Peel County. |
